Large-Scale Well Telemetry System

A thousand-plus-well operation needed telemetry and measurement that could scale across new pads without a re-architecture each time. The answer was edge compute distributed to the field and orchestrated like modern infrastructure.

The challenge

A fleet of this size makes manual, per-site configuration unsustainable and recovery slow when a node fails.

New pads come online constantly, so the system had to grow without bespoke setup every time.

The approach

  • Containerized field services and orchestrated them on lightweight Kubernetes at the edge.
  • Standardized polling and protocol handling so every site is configured the same way.
  • Built recovery and scaling into the platform so new pads join with minimal hands-on work.
  • Fed normalized telemetry into Ignition and the broader data layer.

The outcome

  • Uniform, recoverable deployments across the entire fleet.
  • New pads added quickly without re-engineering the system.
  • A measurement and telemetry backbone built to keep scaling.
